Introducing the Sight Word Hunt Worksheet Generator
Our newest template is the one my own kids' teachers have been hand-drawing on chart paper for years: a single sight word at the top of the page, a grid of words below it, and a highlighter. Students hunt for the focus word and mark it everywhere it appears.
It takes about twenty seconds to make one, and you can make a different one for every word on your weekly list from the same word entry.
What is a Sight Word Hunt?
The first word in your list becomes the focus word, printed in a large box across the top of the page. Below it is a 5 x 4 grid of 20 words drawn from the rest of your list. The focus word appears several times, scattered through the grid. Students read the word at the top, then circle or highlight every match.
The difficulty comes from the words you choose as distractors. man, boy, girl, woman, and, the makes a gentle kindergarten hunt. their, there, they're, them, then makes second graders slow down and read every letter.
It works for letters and numbers too
Nothing about the grid requires whole words, so PreK and kindergarten teachers use this template long before their students are reading:
- Letter recognition: put b first, then fill the list with d, p, and q. Twenty cells of the classic reversals, and students circle only the b.
- Numbers: hunt for 7 among 1, 4, 9, and 17. Teen numbers make a good hunt for the same reason they trip students up.
- Capital and lowercase: set the letter case option to "exactly as you typed it" and mix A with a so students pair a capital with its lowercase partner.
- Phonics patterns: hunt for ship among chip, shop, and shin to put all the attention on the digraph.
Why one word at a time works
Sight words, or high-frequency words, make up a large share of the words in anything a beginning reader picks up. Many of them can't be fully decoded with the phonics patterns students have learned yet, so they need to be recognized instantly and accurately rather than sounded out.
That kind of recognition comes from repeated, focused exposure. A hunt gives students five or six looks at the same word in a single activity, and every distractor they reject is another close look at the target word's letters and shape. Compared to writing a word five times, students are doing more discriminating and less copying.

Ways to use it in your classroom
- Circle or highlight: Students read the focus word aloud, then mark every match. Highlighters, dot markers, and bingo chips all work.
- Read every cell: Students read each cell left to right and mark only the focus word. Now it's fluency practice on the whole list, not just the target.
- Count and write: Students count their finds, write the number at the bottom, then write the word three times from memory. The count tells you at a glance who scanned carefully.
- Race a partner: Same sheet, two colors, one-minute timer. Most correct marks wins, and a wrong mark costs a point so accuracy still matters.
- A week from one list: Move a different word to the front of your list each time and generate again. Five sheets, five days of warm-ups.

How the grid gets filled
- The first word you enter is the focus word at the top of the page.
- Enter up to 20 words. If you enter fewer, every word appears at least once and the list repeats to fill the grid, with the focus word appearing most often.
- If you enter more than 20 words, we use the first 20.
- We avoid placing the same word in two touching cells whenever the list makes that possible, so the grid doesn't give away the answer.

- Letter case: all lowercase, all uppercase, or exactly as you typed it
Lowercase is the default, since that's how students will meet these words in books. Uppercase is handy for pre-K students who are still learning capitals.
