How to Create Effective Roll and Read Worksheets in Under a Minute
Roll and Read worksheets are a simple yet powerful word study activity for grades K-3 that helps students build phonics, word study, and spelling skills through engaging gameplay. Students roll a dice, read the word in the matching column, and cross it out, making learning fun and interactive.
In this guide, I'll show you how to create Roll and Read worksheets that help students master spelling, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary through hands-on activities that you can fully customize.
What is Roll and Read?
Roll and Read is a simple word study activity for grades K-3. Students roll a dice, read the word in the matching column, and cross it out.
This worksheet type has been made popular by the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI)'s Foundations Toolbox.
Teachers use these worksheets to have their students play games that reinforce their weekly lessons. These worksheets are also great as a baseline for games that let students practice spelling and vocabulary.
How do students use a Roll and Read worksheet?
There are a lot of ways to use these worksheets.
Roll and Read for individual practice
Students can use the worksheet to practice spelling and vocabulary words. They can roll the die and read the word in the matching column, and cross it out.
Variations:
- Timed Challenge: Set a one-minute timer. Students roll and read as many rows as they can before time's up.
- Self-Tracking: Students color in or mark each row they've read correctly to track progress.
- Fluency Recording: Students record themselves reading and listen back to monitor improvement.
- Roll, Read and Retell: Students roll the die, read the word, and then write or illustrate a story using the word.
Roll and Read with a partner
Students can also use Roll and Read with a partner.
- Students take turns rolling and reading the row that matches their roll.
- Partners listen and check for accuracy or use a checklist (decoding accuracy, smoothness, expression).
- After both have read, they trade roles.
Play Roll and Read Battleship with a group
In Roll and Read Battleship, the object is for each student to not have their "ship" (one of the words they've chosen to highlight) sunk. Each student highlights two sets of adjacent words. Each student takes turns rolling the die and picking a word to read. If any student in the group has highlighted that word, they yell "I'm hit!" and everyone writes that student's initial in the sheet. The last student standing wins! Here is a wonderful video showing how to play Read and Roll Battleship with your students:
